Throughout this Pilgrimage we have seen many amazing monuments and been to many battle fields both large and small, but it is the individual stories of the ordinary soldiers that strike me the most.
Every name on the Vimy Memorial, like every name on a grave marker in the cemeteries that we have visited, weaves a tale. The fisherman, the bank clerk, the miner, the cowboy, from every walk of life from every corner of Canada. Some were lost forever and some buried in a cemetery not visited in years.
It is their stories that we must remember, because no man is truly dead as long as he is remembered. We must remember the “Silent Witnesses” that remind us of our legacy and duty to Remember always.
